This class will be directed specifically at the beginning interactions between children during play. It will aim to increase attending to peers and play, as well as basic reciprocal interactions. Some fundamental necessary language will be demonstrated, instructed, and practiced, including beginning conversation questions, and beginning statement-statement interactions. Activities may include basic ball play, cooperative play with puzzles and drawings, and other reciprocal play such as hot potato, red rover (no contact), hide and seek, tag, dancing, and follow the leader. Appropriate for ages 2-3.
Sharing, Caring, and Turn Taking
This camp will incorporate several objectives necessary for developing social skills and friendships. They include practicing beginning turn-taking skills such as greetings, waiting for a turn and asking for a turn, understanding the importance of sharing and learning how to share, and basic assertiveness. Appropriate for ages 3-4.
This camp is perfect for children who love and respond to music! Campers will learn to identify and play basic instruments. They will also learn to differentiate and practice tapping out various rhythms. Activities will include singing, interactive fingerplays, and other movement games.
Join us as we play and learn about sports. This is an opportunity for your child to learn key terms and ideas about particular sports while they practice teamwork and confidence building in a non-competitive setting. Some of the sports themes will include tee-ball/softball, basketball, soccer and other fun outdoor sports. This camp will meet at Queeny Park; the exact location will be disclosed at a later date. Please send with your child a bottle with cool water and a snack. Appropriate for ages 4 and up.
This hobby can be as much fun for the kids as it is for adults. Our camp offers a unique way for your child to practice fine motor skills, such as cutting, gluing, and writing in a fun and interactive setting. Advanced skills may include journaling and the development of episodic memories. Each day will be a different theme in which the children will create their own scrapbook pages. The children will have an opportunity to present their finished pages to the group. You supply the pictures that can be cut and affixed to pages, and we will create a scrapbook that can be looked back upon with fond memories. Appropriate for ages 4 and up.
This camp can serve as a creative outlet for your child while exposing him or her to a variety of art media including paint, clay, paper mache, and chalk. Each day consists of both individual projects as well as group projects that facilitate the development of skills necessary for teamwork. Games and other fun activities will also include each child presenting their completed artwork for the day. Appropriate for ages 3 and up.
Watch your child enjoy movements to music as they learn basic dance steps as well as life skills such as turn-taking, listening, and social interaction. During this camp, your child will stretch muscles, feel rhythm, and learn the art of movement. Dance attire may be worn but is not a necessity. Children are encouraged to wear loose clothing in which their bodies can easily move. If your child does not have ballet or tap shoes, socks and tennis shoes may be worn. Caregiver participation welcomed.
This camp is a sampling of all five of our social skills summer camps rolled into one week. Each day will focus on highlights from a topic of week-long focus in the summer. These topics include emotions, manners, conversation, theory of mind, and friendship.
Social Skills Theme Week—Focus on Emotions
This camp will offer intensive exposure to emotional awareness. Objectives will include identifying one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others, identifying emotional triggers, linking life events to specific emotions, and identifying strategies for coping with emotions.
Social Skills Theme Week—Mostly Manners
This camp will offer intensive exposure to manners and other unspoken social rules. Objectives will include understanding why manners are important, distinguishing between good and bad manners, and identifying situation-specific manners.
Social Skills Theme Week—Conversation Starters
This camp will offer intensive exposure to conversational skills. Objectives will include developing turn-taking skills within conversation, developing good listening skills, choosing appropriate responses to a conversational partner, practicing conversational statements and questions, and working on topic development and maintenance.
Social Skills Theme Week—Theory of Mind
This camp will introduce the complexities of theory of mind. Objectives will include understanding that people have different thoughts, understanding that the same things may make people feel different ways, and beginning to predict what someone will think or feel.
Social Skills Theme Week—Forming Friendships
This camp will focus on the development of skills needed for successful friendships. Objectives will include understanding what friend is, recognizing who your friends are, understanding how friends may be similar and different, and learn how to make new friends.
Advanced Social Skills Theme Week—Self-Esteem Builder
This camp will focus on empowering children who struggle with their self-confidence and self-esteem. Activities will promote building a positive self-concept through recognizing skills and strengths, accepting differences, and developing pride for accomplishments.
Advanced Social Skills Theme Week—Conflict Resolution
This camp will focus on conflict resolution skills for children including recognizing a conflict and its causes, developing language and ideas for compromise and negotiation, and skills for deciding on appropriate solutions in various situations.
Advanced Social Skills Theme Week—Self-Control Development
This camp will focus on promoting self-regulative strategies for children. Objectives will include recognizing early signs of anger and agitation, developing self-calming strategies, expressing emotion appropriately, and accepting feedback and consequences.
Advanced Social Skills Theme Week—Safe & Sound
This camp will teach children important safety concepts including safety in the home, school, and community, with a special focus on “stranger-danger”. Other topics will include telephone safety, traffic safety, water safety, and dealing with emergencies.
Advanced Social Skills Theme Week—Pushing Past Peer Pressure
This camp will focus on teaching children to effectively deal with peer pressure. Objectives will include recognizing peer pressure, deciding on appropriate alternatives, and developing assertiveness. Special attention will be given to dealing with bullies.
This camp will help children learn to examine social situations, integrate their thoughts and then draw appropriate conclusions--skills necessary for successful socialization. We will work on recognizing relevant details, such as nonverbal cues and social context, and assimilating them to form an idea about what is happening in a given scenario. We will also focus on the integration of new information that may reshape our previous beliefs. All of these skills form the process of critical thinking, and throughout the week we will teach the children the tools they can use to become analytical social thinkers. This will be done with group projects, games and other activities. Appropriate for ages 5 and up.
